Corneal Transplant
Corneal Transplant
This really great patient had developed keratoconus or asomewhat distorted cornea that was thinning. Due to the thinning, he needed to have both of his corneas repaclaced by donor corneas. This was completed in 2000 at Manhatten Eye and Ear Hospital in Manhatten. Note in the photo the radial sutures at 11:30, 2:00, 5:30, and 7:00 o'clock positions as well as the single running (zig-zagged) suture. Also, noted the white band of the transplant button. His visual acuity before the surgery was about 20/70 best corrected and quite distorted. After the surgery he was able to see about 20/30 without correction with much improved vision. He is regularly checked and it is noted that transplanted corneas can thin and may need to be replaced. At times areas of the cornea adjacent to the radial sutures may swell causing some flare at nightime at which time he needs appropriate steroid treatement to bring this swelling down.
